This should work. I wouldn't say I do it often, but I have done it
several times over the years, certainly with lilo. I can't think of an
instance where I have done it with grub, but it's how I set uop Mandrake
with LILO on a RHL box some years ago, and right now I I have a box with
grub in the mbr, lilo in one partition and Darwin's in another.
I have, however, never used reiserfs.
I do know there have been adverse reports of d-i and RAID on Debian lists.
