Ok, that's cool (I figured from the word "debugging" but I didn't
realise that the entire icon theme was that way, goo to hear it's a
priority).

*wild stab in the dark* I was thinking that the background is set in gconf,
and that we know the resolution from the X magic configuration, so if
resolution looks like it's widescreen (or even just matches the res of the
widescreen background) then set the gconf key for the background
appropriately.

I found a solution, rebooting, but I'd really expected to be able to use
everything after logging in the first time.  If we need a second reboot
to do anything fancy then I should be asked (explicitly, not in a hidden
debconf message) to reboot.

Sure, attached both the dead.letter in which I found the debconf
messages, and base-config.log
