I do not think that was the consensus; at least Mark and I seem to feel that
we should set the volume to a moderate level.

Anyone who has a big amplifier connected to their computer:

a) needs to be careful when plugging in new devices, regardless of whether
it is a computer or a dumb audio device

b) will know what to do

The question is, where and when would we set it?  Perhaps on initial
alsa-base installation, when it finds that no mixer settings are saved.
