I _have_ done fully software RAID post-install.

I did it for the purposes of doing it, so the config came up a bit 
strange: mirror on hda{1,2} and hdc{1,2}.

Grub had to be installed on the underlying disks, not on md{0,1}.

Much to my surprise with this setup, hdparm showed the same disk speeds 
for hd{a,c} and md{0,1}.
