If you can run XRESPROBE_DEBUG=yes xresprobe ati, you will get some very
useful information about what the xresprobe utility is doing. It's
likely throwing away 1280x1024 at 60 precisely because it will look
terrible; it's instead shooting for the monitor's optimum resolution of
1024x768.
