I think it would be even more interesting to map the same concept to the
packaging system, so that the user would be advised to upgrade their kernel,
or install linux-restricted-modules, etc. rather than downloading code from
a random website and inserting it into the kernel (hey, we at least have the
infrastructure for authentication in place, though we don't use it yet :-)
).  By post-processing the kernel packages to extract the device maps, we
could pretty easily create a global database of which devices are supported
by which packages in Ubuntu.
