hdparm has a lot of settings, so you might want to look into optimising your 
drive, but this sort of falls out of our scope of ubuntu discussion.

Going back to that, the problem with drives is that there are so many 
settings, and not all drive manufacturers implement the options correctly, so 
some settings need to be blacklisted for each drive. This ends up being a 
huge database, and you never know if:
 1. someone has mis-labelled a drive
 2. someone has not labelled a drive

Each can be equally a problem.
