The stock driver works quite well for 2D in my experience. I use it with
everything from a GeForce2 mx400 through a GeForce 4 550 with great
satisfaction.
If you want 3D, you need to install
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.8.1-{386,686,686-smp,k6,k7,k7-smp} (the
appropriate one for your kernel) and nvidia-glx. You may also want
nvidia-settings.
I believe the driver will be used if you force re-autodetection of X; you
can also use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and choose the driver
manually.
