Why pppoe don't starts at boot?

I have configured by the pppoeconf and choosed to automatically starts 
at boot. But this don't works. The command pon dsl-provider don't works 
too, they say that maybe i've using kernel 2.4.x that doesn't support pppoe.
But starting the connection through pppoeconf this works fine.

Someone knows to correct the problem?
I'm using Ubuntu Warty
