I agree, I just find it weird.

I don't necessarily agree there. I've never come across anyone who
knows of Ubuntu that doesn't also know of Kubuntu. But then, anyone
I know of who knows of Ubuntu, knows Linux, period.

Considering what a distinct name Ubuntu is and what a great idea it was
in the first place, I feel it's uniqueness is diminished with the
alternations of the name that came about for the other variations.

"'Ubuntu' is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others".
Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are". The Ubuntu
Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world."

"Kubuntu [means] 'towards humanity' in Bemba."*

                                               -kubuntu.org

"Kubuntu Linux's name definition was a damn stroke of good luck. As I'm
sure it took a bit of digging to scrape up the Bemba stuff.

Prior to that, I'm sure it simply meant "Ubuntu with KDE instead of
GNOME" ;-)

In any event I suppose it makes sense, but it is odd, compared to other
distros. I mean when I install one from CD or DVD and apt-get the other
do I have Ubuntu? Kubuntu? Ubuntu/Kubuntu? Kubuntu/Ubuntu? KubuUbuntu?
UbuKubuntu?

Not to mention it took me forever and a day to get Thunderbird trained
NOT to put my Kubuntu mailing list stuff in my Ubuntu mailing list
folder. ;-)
