Both the defaults in Ubuntu & Kubuntu.  As for this only being a problem on
Ubuntu lists, the OP must not subscribe to many lists.  I've seen _exactly_
this complaint from Thunderbird users on many lists I subscribe to.

Using Thunderbird, you may prefer to use the gmane news gateways at
news.gmane.org
