The main advantage for me was that it's often useful to be able to use
"back" and "forward" to navigate seamlessly between the web and the
local filesystem. I don't remember the specifics but I used to use this
all the time when I ran Windows.
I don't really know of any theory or research behind it, I just know
from experience that lots of Windows users find this useful.
