Interesting article here that suggests AMD are looking to make friends with
the Linux market. I would have thought that it would make more sense to open
up the specs so there is nothing hidden for the kernel developers. As the
kernel is a hell of a lot more malleable and changes shape so much quicker
than the hardware does.

AMD cuddles with Linux
AMD <http://www.amd.com/> apparently wants to set up a research group in
Dresden not only to optimize Linux for its own processors, but also to
integrate the requirements of the open operating system in the development
process for future processor generations. At least, that's what three
ads<http://www.amd-jobs.de/de/einstieg/freiestellen.php>for the Fab
36 <http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/71669> would seem to suggest: the
company is looking for a Linux kernel developer, a developer for the
virtualization of operating systems, and a developer of operating system
tools for the "Operating System Research Center" in Dresden. Unfortunately,
these job searches do not make it very clear what this research center is,
and AMD has yet to answer a query by heise open <http://www.heiseopen.de/>.
According to the job
openings<http://www.amd-jobs.de/de/einstieg/stellenanzeige.php?view=362>,
the kernel developer's task will be to optimize the Linux kernel for AMD
processors and to help processor designers "better support the requirements
of modern operating systems in future processor generations." Knowledge of C
and x86_64 assemblers is required. The job
description<http://www.amd-jobs.de/de/einstieg/stellenanzeige.php?view=364>for
virtualization was similar: this person's task is to optimize Xen on
AMD
processors and help improve Xen support in future AMD processors. According
to the job description<http://www.amd-jobs.de/de/einstieg/stellenanzeige.php?view=363>for
the tool developer, this person will not only be developing Linux
tools
for AMD processors, but also helping optimize processors for Linux. (*Craig
