As they are in Debian - but for the life of me I can't remember which name
relates to which version. Names are much easier to remember.

Not "understand" but "care". I know what dapper is, you know what dapper
is, and for the average user "6.06" just doesn't matter (especially since
it isn't 6.06 _yet_).

It's just a matter of using symlinks, as Debian does - I wish we had
something like (but not identical to) stable/testing so that a person would
_never_ have to change sources.list.
