Webmail service with POP access : suggestions ?

Yeah, I don't intend to switch everything to gmail. It's mainly for private contacts/friends. Some of them recently appear to have recurrent problems sending me mails, so if the problems persist, I want to have an alternative e-mail that works better, and because I don't want to use a web site/interface to manage my e-mail (hence I think most gmail features will have me addicted in any way), it needs pop access.
