I don't know what led you to believe that this couldn't be done; of course
it can, and I think it would be a great idea to get this tool into universe
and allow adventurous users to test it.  It will likely require some
adjustments in order to work well on Ubuntu.

In summary, yes, this would be a welcome contribution.  However, do bear in
mind that X.org upstream has said that they do not believe this is the best
solution in the long term, and that parts of it are likely to become
obsolete with X.org 7.3.
