I have good news to report. My brother-in-law sent me another message 
tonight:

"Back on Ubuntu. Bought a combined modem router. Set up in 30 seconds"

So, that's my mother, my sister and my brother-in-law using Ubuntu now. 
Maybe I'll work on converting more family members :)
