These are orthogonal. Are you personally running LinuxBIOS along
with a (presumably) free OS, or vendor-provided one?
Fanatism is dangerous in every corner of life... and life's
complicated, there are very few simple and right answers usually.
As to the possible practical reasons for this, Alan McKinnon
already described one of them (except that it's hard to estimate
others' stupidity having more than a chance to experience one's
own).
