They didn't succumb to the sight of Mark's chequebook quite as easily as the
former owners of canonical.com :)
I'm personally of the opinion that it was better to /launch/ with a '.org'
(even if it wasn't quite the one people wanted) as it helped to diffuse a
proportion of the "OMG teh evil c0rporate" responses.
At the moment---and in the long-term---the 'ubuntu.com' address is the
better one to focus around because it provides a slight credence to the
business sector that perhaps (sadly) 'debian.org' doesn't quite manage.
Many other organisations have tried to present a split-personality:
linspire.com linspire.org
suse.com opensuse.org
redhat.com fedora.redhat.com
and I'm not sure it works; it smacks of the "second-rate product" that
Ubuntu is very specifically trying to avoid and provides confusion about
which site you should look at to locate the information.
We should be able to get one site ("a central clearing house") enginneered
to the needs of several markets and do it quite successfully.
