It depends on the camera. Some come up as storage, some don't.

Those which don't are accessible only via the protocols implemented by
libgphoto2

Perhaps someone could write a fuse filesystem to expose such cameras as
a directory. Until then, you have to make-do with gthumb etc for
importing photos off such cameras
