Have a look at the Bastille Linux[1] setup script - it takes you through a
whole series of questions/options, with well-written explanations the whole
way and a discussion of the tradeoffs/possible pitfalls of various options.
I ran it on a server install of Ubuntu I was messing around with, and it was
quite educational in itself, WRT computer security.
The Bastille Linux setup seems to be very close to what Chanchao is talking
about.
Of course, a large part of the problem isn't really technical, but legal -
patents and other stupidity.
