Contributing to Ubuntu: Where would I start?

I'm a Ubuntu user since Hoary (April 2005), professional Unix
(AIX/Solaris/FreeBSD/HPUx) user since 1996, software develper fluent in
C++, C (application, client/server and TCP/IP protocol development) and
not a total stranger to bash. I don't really know Python but would like
to learn it.

If I wanted to actually start contributing to the Ubuntu project, where
would i start? Where would I volunteer?
