Thank you for a thought-provoking article. It's too bad people are
skimming and dismissing it rather than recognizing it for what it is.

I think the disconnect is because people don't take the patents
seriously, and don't realize this is a deadly serious business for the
corporate lawyers, as you point out. Doesn't anyone remember that
Macromedia AND Adobe lost GUI patent suits against each other (not too
long before Adobe consumed Macromedia)?

For the users, yes it makes sense to have floating tool palettes work
the same in Photoshop AND in Fireworks. But no, that was an
infringement.

Standard Ubuntu looks and feels like Windows in some specific, patent
protected ways. So Microsoft may have a case against it.
