Otoh, I hate the BSD license because it allows anybody to take my work and
make it, essentially, their own.  There's no requirement to keep their
product, which may be 99% mine, free.

That's just silly.  There's no such thing as freedom _without_ conditions. 
How does the saying go?  "Your freedom to wave your fist ends at the tip of
my nose"?  GPL is very much about freedom - it's about my freedom to share
my code without anybody being able to commercialize my work.  BSD is about
a whole different sort of freedom.
