An awkward metaphor springs to mind: You hang from a rope off a cliff,
over a vast space. The rope is tied to a sturdy tree, and the other end
to you. Your external reality is all of that. Your perception is the end
of the rope you are holding, perhaps the 'rope' as a concept.
Our perception is important, for without it we would not be there to
perceive, but it's just one end of the rope.
Gah, giving up on metaphors for a while. I'm on a diet!
