Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: espeak
For most of the gutsy cycle, espeak has been built against PortAudio v19, allowing speech to be heard at the
same time as other audio is played throught the sound device. However, this is more problematic then first
hoped.
When attempting to use espeak with gnome-orca via the gnome-speech espeak driver, gnome-orca locks up when
attempting to speak several streams of text rapidly, one after another. This usually occurs the first time you
start orca, and it loads its main window, and preferences window. If orca settings are present in the user's
home directory, orca starts, but if one rapidly moves through text or menu items, the same lockup occurrs.
The actual problem lies in PortAudio's Alsa code, and has been reported on the portaudio mailing list by an
accessibility developer from the blind Linux community. The PortAudio developers have contacted the alsa
maintainers regarding the issue, but so far nothing more has come from the discussion.
Since gutsy release is so close, I would like to request that we re-include portaudio v18 on the CD, to ensure
that speech works on the live CD, and installed systems. If done by beta, this should give us time to get as
much testing done as possible, to ensure all accessibility technologies work as advertised on the live CD.
