Hi Keith,

Yes, we patch our kernel a fair bit to add useful features like speakup ;)

We had an implementation plan for this for Edgy but we ran out of time 
to complete it so we haven't announced anything. I believe the current 
status is that the module is compiled with the kernel and included with 
the system but that no user space scripts have been written to load or 
manage it. We are hoping to get some scripts into edgy universe at 
least, but the freeze for that is fast approaching too. I've never used 
speakup myself so I am not too sure how this works. Luke and Ben would 
be the Ubuntu people to ask.

If you are able to help with the user space scripts it would be much 
appreciated :)
