I have been attempting to navigate pages with firefox and am not getting any speech feedback. On occasions, I get the links announced but no text is announced. Orca reads "html container" and that is all I get. I also find that once the system has started and orca comes up, I do not seem to get any reliable speech. Is there anything else I should install to improve things, I have a hardware speech synth, if that would help. When I start and get no speech, my daughter tells me that the update manager is suggesting updates, she gets the updates but there is no speech during all of this process. Is there any documentation I should be reading? Thanks and sorry for the basic questions. These projects will not vanish, but the news does have an impact on each. == Accerciser Eitan Isaacson is busy preparing Accerciser for inclusion in GNOME 2.20 under a grant from the Mozilla Foundation. Its development and documentation is far enough along that it should only require minimal future maintenance (i.e. bug fixes, updates to stay in sync with at-spi). As far as I know, Eitan plans to stay on as maintainer of Accerciser after the grant concludes. I will do my best to support pyatspi as problems arise until another member of the GNOME community is expert enough to own the binding. Since pyatspi is in the at-spi module, Li Yuan remains as the proper maintainer. == LSR Development on LSR as a screen reader for GNOME will cease. We will make one last release of LSR 0.5.3 on Monday in line with GNOME 2.19.3. The ATK/AT-SPI-specific support of XUL and HTML must now be via the existing community and module peers. Aaron will continue to be available to review bug fixes in those areas. Right now I have an Asus laptop, which I just bought, that apparently doesn't work well at all with Ubuntu, especially the sound, which is rather important for me. It's model number ASUS A8SC-A1, pretty much hot off the press (the files on the hard drive are dated May 16). Right now I'm thinking I may have to return it and go with a Del 1501, which seems to work well in a normal configuration, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with it using Orca. After following the below procedure, you should be able to get virtualbox and other programs which use alsa to work at the same time as espeak. Please note that it is possible that you will lose speech all together if something goes rong, so I would recommend only doing this if you have some other way of accessing the machine which doesn't depend on gnome-speech like ssh or emacspeak etc. open a terminal and type the following command: sudo dpkg-divert --rename /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver make sure it worked with: ls /usr/bin/espeak-* it should say /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver.distrib If you don't have nano installed, install it: sudo apt-get -q install nano or use a different editor in the next command: sudo nano -w /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver enter the following text: #!/bin/bash exec /usr/bin/aoss /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver.distrib $@ save and exit with control-x, then y then enter. now type: sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver Log out and in again, and if everything went ok, you should have espeak working with alsa. from withing virtualbox, you can switch back to Ubuntu by pressing the right control key and then alt tab. If you lose speech, or it isn't working well, you can restore it with: make sure that /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver.distrib exists before entering the following commands: sudo rm /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver sudo dpkg-divert --rename --local --remove /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver Any problems, let me know. One is a VIA C3 box with no audio connection, I access it via Speakup using a Dectalk Express. I was very pleasantly surprised to see the stock Ubuntu kernel comes with Speakup pre-built, that at a stroke will make my life much easier. However, due to interrupt changes in the 2.6.20 kernel the Speakup Dectalk Express driver was broken for a while. Downloading the latest Ubuntu kernel sources it appears it's using Speakup from October 2006 - the Dectalk Express fixes went in with the April 13 commit this year. So, are there plans for the stock kernel to update its included Speakup version to the latest CVS? Years of rpmbuild has clearly rotted my brain as I have been encountering some ahem user error in trying to hand-update the sources myself and rebuild. Or is this a question best aimed at the kernel list (assuming there is one)? Of course the volume will be low, so you have to modify the conf file for speech-dispatcher to a value of 50 to increase it. One other thing I found is the feature to start orca automatically is also broken and you have to start orca manually every time. I haven't found any new features yet, but the version of orca is later than the one in feisty, and the preferences for accessibility are nicely grouped together. Mike. There are several problems with speakup in the kernel going forward. The crux is that the speakup project has not been following the mainline kernel development closely enough and has not managed to to integrate their work into the main line kernel code. We have decided to drop support for speakup in the Gutsy kernel and I hear Gentoo is doing the same. I'm afraid it's simply too complex to maintain over time. There have been long debates about this on the speakup list already. I'm not sure speakup will even compile with the new 2.6.22 kernels (not just in Ubuntu; anywhere). So you'll probably be able to compile a newer speakup version with a Feisty 2.6.20 kernel, and a .deb could be made, but going forward it will be tricky. My suggestion is to start looking at a user space solution, perhaps based on brltty. Right now my first objective is releasing 3.3 in the next days and right after it I have a dream of making a .deb package and getting it into the Ubuntu or Debian repositories > Needless to say, though, I like the program because ti does not use my > CPU resources as highly as gnome-mag does.
