Help! there's something strange with my Synaptic

Hello all,
I'm trying to use Synaptic on my Ubuntu Feisty system, latest version.
When i start the program it seems to start up correctly and i get to see
the Synaptic window, but after a couple of seconds i'm thrown out and
put back where i started when i tried to run the application. This
happens regardless of whether i run it from my user account or as root.
I can't see any error messages, maybe they're there but if so they go by
so quickly that i don't see it. Is this a known issue or is this only on
my system? Where does Synaptic log its error messages?
