Another alternative, which is working perfectly for me, is to divert espeak-synthesis-driver, and replace it with a script which uses aoss to run 
espeak-synthesis-driver.  See the list archives for a step by step explanation.

This allows espeak to use alsa, so you can use other audio apps.  I currently use orca, emacspeak and windows in virtualbox.

Would it be useful if I made a package for this?
