Hurray. I had to left-click anywhere on the text I wanted read, and then the Capslock+semicolon caused it to read all of the text. Tabbing around only reads the links, not the text so it is still a problem for a blind guy to do that left click, and not get sent to a site. Also is it imagination or does Orca voice sound better. You can type Alt+N to enter a new entry -- you will first be taken to the left column, where you type the word you want to define a pronunciation for. Press Return when you're done typing the word. Then, press Ctrl+Right_Arrow to navigate to the right hand column. Press Return to start editing the pronunciation and type the pronunciation in. The pronunciation just consists of ordinary words to substitute for the word in the left column. When you're done typing the pronunciation, press Return. Although I can deal with improving the structure of it a bit, I need help from someone who uses or is knowledgeable about assistive technologies for the technical side. Would anyone be prepared to do a thorough review of the Gnome Accessibility Guide in order to update it for current GNOME? Though I don't know the specifics of vista here, but this wouldn't count as ram, but as swap, which is easily accomplished by mkswap and swapon commands (anyone with knowledge of gui tools to do the same, feel free to step in) for any given storage device. I'm sure you can have a remote swap drive if you really hate yourself that much too. Even though a flash drive might be faster than a normal hard disk, it's not even close to the speed you get from ram, so this isn't really some quick way to add more RAM. I have Thunderbird. when the password box comes to get into my mailbox it will not work if ORCA is on. It will work if I shut Orca down. But then, after downloading mail, I have to reboot to get Orca on again. I think the echo of the star etc causes the password to go out scrambled. This has gotta be tuff for a blind user. Another quirk is at first ORCA read all input of CapsLock+; didn't work, then after a week it did, and would read a paragraph only, and then stoop. In /etc/init.d/brltty (a shell script), it says: # /etc/brltty.conf may need to be propagated from the initramfs. (This is a # pretty awful hack.) if [ -e /dev/.initramfs/brltty.conf ] && [ -e /etc/default/brltty ]; then if [ -e /etc/brltty.conf ]; then mv /etc/brltty.conf /etc/brltty.conf.orig fi mv /dev/.initramfs/brltty.conf /etc/brltty.conf sed -i -e 's/^RUN_BRLTTY=.*/RUN_BRLTTY=yes/' /etc/default/brltty fi I think that these mv lines were causing the problem of my /etc/brltty.conf is being overwritten each time I restart my computer, and I don't know why these lines were here. On my desktop the brltty.conf file is not overwritten, but on my laptop it is. With help, the way we found to solve this problem was to comment the lines that say to rename brltty.conf to brltty.conf.orig and to copy brltty.conf from a place I don't know to /etc. But with this change, brltty stops to start automatically. To solve this, and with help once again, I edited the /etc/udev/rules.d/85-brltty.rules file and changed the references from /lib/brltty/brltty.sh to /bin/brltty. It starts to start automatically and not overwritting the brltty.conf file. So, I'd like to know whether this is a problem or bug or not. Could people that made this scripts or other knowledgeable people see what happens and why or forward this message to them? Thanks for the attention on solving this problem. Ubuntu has made changes to the brltty package to allow for easier configuration of brltty from the live CD, and for install. I wasn't the one who wrote the code, but I'll have a look at the package and see if I can find out why this is done, and will see if I can talk to the person who implemented it, to work out a solution. - -- Luke Yelavich GPG key: 0xD06320CE (http://www.themuso.com/themuso-gpg-key.txt) Email & MSN: themuso at themuso.com Jabber: themuso at jabber.org.au -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFG81NojVefwtBjIM4RAiMbAJ9Ve2gDGcEYxjEsAh1HLaxlhZBDkwCguxjV 0uiU2vKoxF5fOwkNGFDDKuc= =tQ0F -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From kb8aey at verizon.net Fri Sep 21 14:51:09 2007 From: kb8aey at verizon.net (mike coulombe) Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2007 09:51:09 -0500 (CDT) Subject: root account no longer works Message-ID: <0JOQ0018B3X85RP3@vms044.mailsrvcs.net> Hi, Is anyone using the latest version of ubuntu. I have a problem loading the brltty support in ubuntu. I have a baum supervario display connected to the usb interface and it seems that the daemon reset the display every time that I'm going to run the brltty daemon and it never works properly in the end. I tried to disconnect and reconnect again and it starts. The problem is that I should exectute this pocedure everytime. After that,I tried to download, compile and install the last version of brltty from the official website but it seems that it's worst than before, because it doesn't work even if I'm going to disconnect and reconect again. I saw a kind of this problem in another distro but it semms to work correctly after that I updated the kernel. Is there any possible way to avaoid to recompile the entire kernel? Before I ask though, I just want to say congrats to all on the last six months of work on Gnome 2.20. From what I've been able to see so far, I'm very impressed. The voice sounds a heck of a lot better with Espeak, and in Openoffice, the spell-checker now announces what is misspelled, and the context. Now for my questions. 1. Whenever I use apt-get to install anything such as firefox-granparadiso, I get an error that talks about not being able to configure hotkey-setup (failed to start init.d script), and cannot install ubuntu-desktop because it depends on hotkey-setup. Is this why my system sounds aren't playing at startup? 2. How do you enable accessible login? When I press spacebar on the button, I get the password entry, but then nothing reads after that. As always, thanks in advance for any help. I beleave there is another eliquence equivalent voice, called ttsynth, but I couldnt locate its website. There are a few other voices, some free, others you have to pay a small amount for. 2: tested screenreaders? As you probably know everything in open source is always tested and revized/improved. If you wish to have a fully graphical destop (as you have in windows), then Orca is the screenreader for you. If you are happy with a command line and prefer this way of working then there is YASR, emacsspeak and a few other alternatives that I cant currently recall. 3: I believe the default Orca voice is espeak Further more, I would strongly advice you to try the latest Orca sourcecode that can be checked out from svn, because major improvements are made on a regular basis, and therefore the package that comes on the cd might be out-dated. The website of Orca is: http://live.gnome.org/Orca and the Orca mailing list is: orca-list at gnome.org Hope this has answered your initial questions. -Jon On Sat 29/09/2007 at 19:03:28, Hamid Vasheghani Farahani wrote: > Hi all. It doesn't work: - I cannot switch to console for starting brltty (I don't have USB one). - The Alt+F2 doesn't work. I think that nothing works at all. Too bad I haven't some experienced person who would tell me what is happening precisely. - It seems that only thing I can do is to restart it and instead of restarting it freezes :-D. - I tried acpi=off of course. (I must do it for Ubuntu and in general any kernel to boot) Note that I have the 7.04 working so something in beta is broken.
