How to enable text to speech in Edubuntu Fiesty

I am running thin clients from and Edubuntu 7.04 server and need to get text to speech
working.  I messed around for almost a full day and had no luck at all.  Could someone
please provide me with a link to a howto and/or a confirmation that this does work in
the thin client environment?
