If the accessibility mode selected with any option with the live cd boot, please copy the entire /home/ubuntu/.gconf directory to /etc/skel directory. If you doing this method and the admin user create new user account, the new user gets an accessible profile and Orca starts automaticaly when the new user was logged in. I use this method for the BeLin release (similar distribution with Vinux) and works fine. 2. If this method is possible doing, copy the .pulse_a11y_nostart file with the /etc/skel directory. 3. When you search for a video in the table appears a little snapshot of the video and the title on a single column. If you press control + f1 you can see a tooltip that Orca reads OK with the video title. You can open a bug report on http://bugzilla.gnome.org to track this firstly in Orca project and then move it to Totem team to have it fixed. If you can file this on bugzilla would be great, If you need help or you can't file it, I would file it in behalf of you. I've needed to switch back to pulse because, under ALSA, I didn't seem to get speech back when resuming from suspend. In my quest to find the perfect setup, I tried the test version of pulse from Luke's PPA and these did not work well with SD. I've since restored to the Jaunty pulse packages, but I seem to have lost the ~/.pulse_a11y_nostart behavior, as removing the file for a test still gave me a pulseaudio process. Where is this behavior defined? A quick grep through /etc/X11, /etc/xdg and /etc/pulseaudio didn't reveal the string pulse_a11y_nostart, so I'm wondering if it was defined in a config file that got trashed in my upgrade to 0.15? 2. I have an /etc/pulseaudio/a11y_nostart. Can I remove this? Is it a remnant from my beta install? 3. While I did downgrade pulse from Luke's PPA, I kept ALSA 1.0.19. With my user in the pulse-rt group and with this ALSA, if there's a latency difference then it's miniscule, and I actually wondered if pulse was running until I confirmed with paman. Hopefully, with the latency minimized, there'll be research done into the SD crashes, but that's for another list. Just wanted to report that ALSA 1.0.19+pulse+my user in pulse-rt was snappier than before, which gives me hope that eventually we'll just have a single branch of development and focused effort and a11y via pulse won't be such a black art. :) 4. Is theree any way that this SD bug can be looked at, and its patch gotten past the freeze? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/speech-dispatcher/+bug/314185 Basically, sd-conf has an incorrectly-configured sound path, so you can't test the ALSA/Pulse backends. I'd reinstalled the SD packages after I'd done a bit of hacking and had to manually patch this bug to do the testing I needed on an inaccessible system. It's literally a single-character change, so hopefully an exception can be made, but I don't know Ubuntu policy well enough. Thanks. In a few weeks we have ubuntu 9.04 available. I run now 8.10 and it works well. How should I upgrade to 9.04 the safe way? Is it a good way to do a release upgrade or is it better to make a new clean install of the system and keepeing the home folder as it is. I asking this because I had lot of problem upgradeing from 8.04 to 8.10. A lot of packages couldn't be upgraded because I manualy upgraded them from source. I have done so this time too with atk, ap-spi and orca. I also got a lot of problems with orca after the upgrade so it ended with a new clean install of 8.10. So, what is best to do to avoid problems? I can install from a new clean cd instead of upgradeing but do a release upgrade save some time. All the best Tony From tony.sales at rncb.ac.uk Wed Apr 8 19:38:30 2009 From: tony.sales at rncb.ac.uk (Anthony Sales) Date: Wed, 8 Apr 2009 20:38:30 +0100 Subject: Speech-Dispatcher on Ubuntu 8.10! Message-ID: I am very happy to announce that I have now managed to get speech-dispatcher to work on Vinux without losing the multi-channel sound capabilities. The final peice of the jigsaw puzzle fell into place when I was experimenting with Debian Lenny and managed to get speech-dispatcher working properly. I realised that I hadn't been doing anything wrong at all but I hadn't really understood the difference between speech-dispatcher running in user mode and as a system service. What caused this was an error which seems to have crept into spd-conf and my failure to understand the difference bwteen the two modes. For some reason the spd-conf supplied in the Ubuntu 8.10 repositories set the syntheziser port to 6561 for user mode and 6560 for running as a service, and it should be the other way around. Because I didn't understand the difference between the two modes I had been setting up speech-dispatcher in user mode but then using init.d to start it as a service instead of using the speech-dispatcher -d command. Given these two school boy errors I was never going to get it to work! So for anyone who wants to try this at home here is a step by step guide to getting speech-dispatcher working on Ubuntu 8.10 with multi-channel sound support. 1. Run 'sudo apt-get install speech-dispatcher python-speechd' in a terminal 2. Once installed run 'spd-conf' in the same terminal. 3. Accept all of the default options except type 'pulse' for the sound server and '6560' for the synthesizer port. 4. Speech-dispatcher should then speak if everything is going to plan! 5. Use the 'speech-dispatcher -d' command to start up speech-dispatcher as a daemon' 6. Open the Orca preferences window and select speech-dispatcher as the speech synthesizer and click apply. 7. Orca should now be a lot more snappy and responsive. 8. Finally open the Session Manager from the preferences menu, create a new entry called speech-dispatcher and type 'speech-dispatcher -d' as the command, then reboot and enjoy you new snappier speech! 9. If you want to use espeak with YASR, you can then edit the /etc/yasr/yasr.conf file by commenting out the default Eflite synthesizer and uncomment the speech-dispatcher and corresponding synthesizer port entries. Before you type your password, quit Orca. Now enter your password and press enter. Give the app a few seconds to load then start Orca. I found after doing this the apps were accessible. Yes I have an idea how to fix it, however its far too late to get it addressed, because its practically impossible to get changes uploaded without approval and review from the release managers. The best way to try and get a resolution is to file a bug against the casper package in launchpad, and explain the problem. Report back with the bug number and I can follow up on it. I should clarify that I attempted to simply remvoe the files from the partitions. I then attempted to enter partition manager with orca running, and orca immediately stopped speaking. Is there something I'm missing, or something i can do to make ORCA work with the partition editor? Thanks in advance, and I apologise if this is a newbie question. cordially, Tay -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I hear a spoken sound then, however, it does not seem to be working well. The sound is too brief to understand. Setup choices numbers 1 to 52 are language choices. Number 1 and return is default english. After this there are more setting up questions. hope that helps a bit. on a related subject are you aware that knoppix live CD is now voice enabled by default? best regards alan chad wrote: > Hi i'm totally blind and can't get orca to load from the live disc. > are the menus different and is there different steps to take? > is orca included in 9.04 i tried alt-f2 and typed orca but nothing happened -- alan cocks Ubuntu user From halim.sahin at freenet.de Wed Apr 29 07:06:28 2009 From: halim.sahin at freenet.de (Halim Sahin) Date: Wed, 29 Apr 2009 07:06:28 +0000 (UTC) Subject: high cpu load under ubuntu 9.04and orca Message-ID: <20090429070628.GA3666@halim> Hi List, On my laptop powertop says the folowing: 98,4% (6838,0) python : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup) 1,0% ( 71,0) : VIA82XX-MODEM, VIA686A 0,2% ( 13,6) : pata_via 0,1% ( 9,6) : uhci_hcd:usb1, yenta, eth0, 0000:02:00.0 0,1% ( 4,0) gnome-screensav : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup) 0,0% ( 1,4) : neigh_table_init_no_netlink (neigh_periodic_ 0,0% ( 1,2) hald-addon-stor : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup) I have killed all python processes (only orca is running). The project (currently in beta), is called ModelTalker and is aiming at developing software that will make it possible for an individual to produce a SAPI5 speech engine based on their own voice. The training part is expected to take about 5-6 hours. They are currently looking for additional beta testers. I don't know what the licensing is if one makes a synthesis engine based on their own voice, but this might be an alternative to producing a better quality speech engine than what is currently available as the default in Orca. The samples sounded pretty impressive. Anyway, more information can be found at the site: http://www.modeltalker.com/ Pete -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
