I have noticed this problem with karmic

Hi, has anyone had the following problem.
I type nano /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and am no longer able to get to that file. It is the same for yasr, I can't see a conf file for it either.  I first noticed a problem when I couldn't log into the root account.
   Has there been some major change?
