Cannot get console login at Lucid startup

Hi,

I know this isn't strictly an accessibility thing, but I seem to have
exhausted all other possibilities.

I'm running Lucid from a live cd of about 5 days ago. When I start the
system and attempt to login at the audible prompt, my system locks up on
most attempts. Why it works sometimes, especfialy if I wait about a
minute, is a mystery. Anyway, I've removed the file "/etc/init.d/gdm",
as suggested in the Ubuntu forums. Also, I have run "sudo update-rc.d
gdm remove", also as suggested. Gdm is nowhere in system services; I've
looked with bootup manager and sysv-rc-conf. What am I missing?

To start this system, I do as follows:

power on;
wait for audio prompt;
switch to another console;
log in;
enter "sudo gdm-stop";
enter my password;
wait about 3 seconds;
type "startx".

When I hear the music, I wait about 30 seconds, then manually start
orca. When I start this way, I have to manually authenticate my wifi
connection and enter login password to unlock the keyring.

This problem did not present when I installed the system. Any ideas?

Best Regards,

Dave  H.
