What happened with Tomboy applet in Natty?

I agree that this is not really a good alternative, and the workaround
is just a workaround, not a bugfix.

The shortcuts are not working anymore, and I think that's caused by the
switch to indicators (it lost several other features because of that
switch), but not 100% sure.
