Ubuntu 11.10 Live CD vs. HD installation

Hi list:

I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 to my hD.   I seemed to have problems accessing certain things like the dialog to run a command (alt-f2) and some other things.  However, when I installed to my HD, some things seemed to work better.

Is this because I downloaded updates as I was installing?

Another thing.  When I booted 11.10 and used the f5 and option 3 to enable speech, the installer seemed a little different than when I just pressed CTRL+s to start ORCA and then perform an install.  The install I accessed through the alt-f1 menu seemed to have more messages I had to tab through, where the one I used with CTRL-s to start orca was a little quicker to tab through.
