My updates came in today, and installed Unity 5.2 (I am using 2d on this machine), and since then, I don't have access to the global menu that I was getting by pressing f10. Did something change? At least I didn't think we were supposed to have hud in Unity 2d. As an added note, on my desktop, which is also running precise alpha 2, I do not have speech access to the launcher or dash in Unity 3d. If these are known bugs, I will continue testing and wait, as other aspects of precise are working very well. I ran ubuntu-bug after raising the volume and rebooting, so the system was no longer exhibiting this behavior when I ran ubuntu-bug. I see this behavior when booting from the install CD and then on the first boot after the install. Would it make sense to reinstall Precise and run ubuntu-bug after that first reboot and before raising the volume? I'll need sighted assistance for this, so it may take me a day or two to get to this. What about running ubuntu-bug from the Live CD itself, again before raising the volume? Again I'd need sighted assistance, but would ubuntu-bug even work in this environment? Also, I don't think the sound is actually muted. I had my wife take a look at the screen, and the horn wasn't crossed out. The volume was set to 0 though, and I did have to raise it from 0. I use control+alt+tab to get to the bottom edge panel (I think I have to hit this twice.) and then I tab over to the wireless network connection applet. I think Vinux tweaked the desktop layout a bit, but I would think a variation of the above would work. If you're talking about a production system, then I'd suggest taking a look at Vinux. This is a distro based on Ubuntu that has some of the accessibility rough edges smoothed out for you. The URL to the Vinux project is at: http://vinuxproject.org/ If you're talking about a production system, I wouldn't recommend Ubuntu 11.10. If you are running it though then I make sure to report the problems you're seeing so they can be addressed in Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded my software updates earlier, and after reboot, I cannot get orca to read any of the menus in programs such as Libreoffice, Pidgin and Firefox. Furthermore, none of the keyboard shortcuts, such as alt+f4, and alt+space are working. These are especially important ones, because they perform certain tasks as minimizing and closing windows. Is this a known bug? Is there a current work around? Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. This machine is running precise, with all latest updates, and I am logged into Unity 2d. USB creator used to be accessible, however when you tried to copy an Ubuntu image to a USB drive, USB creator would freeze if orca was running. THis is a bug in GTK do to with threading and accessibility. To work around it, the GTK UI was moved to another thread, however this has made USB creator inaccessible. What I *think* is going on, is that the atk bridge module is being loaded in the main thread, even though the GTK ui is in another thread, so, the atk bridge module cannot find any GTK UI to interface with. I suspect the solution is loading the atk bridge module in the same thread as GTK, but I haven't worked out how this could be done yet. First post to this list after being on here for a few days. I have joined as I want to get back into the world of Ubuntu. I am a former computer studies student, obtained a certificate as a result, so should be smart enough smiles. Because I don't wish to use Ubuntu full time, I would rather install it in some safe environment, like via Wubi, the Ubuntu installer program for Windows. Now, I sort of have this to work, by choosing Braille in the accessibility part of the installer. However, when I reboot, I am asked to select a Braille display connection, like USB. Since I do not have one, do I choose exit and if so will Orca still come up automatically, both before and after log in? I realize there is Vinux, but there is no real safe way to install, except in a virtual environment. This is good, however it is sometimes nice to try things on a physical set up, due to native hardware support, improved performance, etc. Thank you in advance for any enquiries. When the screensaver activates, orca quits talking. This will cause the visually impaired user to either wait an extremely long time for the installation to complete or a person must keep hitting a shift key to prevent the screensaver starting. Also, after the installation finishes, I removed the cd, restarted. When the desktop starts up, the computer must be restarted again to have orca start automatically.
