I'm afraid I can't follow the rationale here.  You say that "Using 2to3
leads to invalid code"; but AIUI you're reporting this bug because of
version 0.8.1-5 in kinetic-proposed, which specifically includes a
change from the Debian maintainer to NOT use 2to3 on the source.

And you've attached a patch here which fixes the specific import error
shown in the autopkgtest failure.

So why not simply forward this patch to Debian? I can't follow if there
is something buggy about the python3-mailer binary package in the
release pocket (which passes its autopkgtest), or if this patch is
insufficient to fix the autopkgtest failures, or something else.
