Peter: Are you sure that the marketing manager of the student association realised that Ubuntu is free and open-source software, and not commercial? I can understand them getting antsy if they thought you were illegally giving away commercial software.
Graham: Did you do an "expert" install of Ubuntu? If so, it would've asked you to create a root user password as well as a normal user account. You can't log in as root user in Ubuntu, so you must log in using the normal user account.
Also, try hitting Control-Alt-F1 at the login screen. That will bring you to a text terminal. Try logging into that, and tell us what happens.
