Cut and Paste in gmail

A message posted by me to an intended private recipient was redirected to
the list, thereby cluttering up another thread. Therefore this is a fresh
posting.
The original question was:
Is there a way to paste something from a screen while working in gmail
without loosing that screen whenever I try to click on the gmail screen.
Sounds convoluted doesn't it?
Whenever I try to copy and paste a URL to be inserted into a gmail message,
the screen that the URL has been copied to is minimised and I have to toggle
back and forth between what I have saved and the gmail message that I am
trying to write.
Is there a way to keep a small screen visible while in gmail so that I can
copy from there to the gmail message without the small screen disappearing?
And, if I click on the leftmost icon at the top, as recommended, where
minimise to taskbar and close live at the right of the bar, I get minimise,
unmaximise, on top, move, resize, close, always on visible workspace, move
to workspace left (or right) and move to another workspace.
Am I pressing the wrong button or are there some crossed wires here?
Cheers,
Andre
