Hi Les

thx 4 the response. Will have to look more closely at much of what u put 
forward here. Have some degree of familiarity with projectx from the windows 
side of things. As far as reading the disks is concerned, that has been 
solved. Turned out I had to finalize the disks via the dvr forst b4 ubuntu 
could  mount them and read them. U've given me a lil to mul over and check 
out
