Hello Tony,
We were all newcomers once. Experience grows slowly.
It is very tempting to download lots of programs because they are there,
listed in "Synaptic Package Manager". The easier option is to download and
install via "Applications -> Add/Remove Applications" right there on your
Ubuntu desktop.
There are two very good programs that will do your downloading and
installing for you: Easy Ubuntu and Automatix. These provide access to the
most commonly sought additions to the base Ubuntu installation.
There are many books available on using the command line and it is not that
much different to what was used in the days of DOS.
What exactly did you want to download or install?
Here is a useful URL for you: "
http://ubuntu.xgn.com.br/ubuntu_user_guide.pdf"
Cheers,
Andre
