lost Sound and freezing PC

Hi Everyone,

The other day I upgraded Skype and when testing it, there was no sound.
I tried 'System - sound'. tested the sound settings on Alsa and could
not get a sound when testing. In fact the system froze and I had to
restart.  Immediately after having signed in, the response under Ubuntu
file icons shows "Nautilus - Restricted Manager". Whatever that means !.

Trying the recovery mode, the system switches me to some  the
'root'-area after a while, but as a newb I have no idea what to put in.

If I re-install Ubuntu from the CD, I guess I will loose all the
pictures and photos ?

There was an automatic "update" warning this morning, I tried to
activate it and it worked. Sending this message and receiving email also
works. Yet other things freeze.

With your help, where do I go from here ?
