GDM hangs on Fiesty

I have this same problem. It happened when I upgraded from edgy to 
fiesty. I posted to this list and to the ubuntuforums, but Im still on 
KDM for my work PC. A few solutions did turn up which have worked for 
others, just not in my case.

You could try booting into "recovery mode" from grub, and then typing 
"startx" either as root or as a regular user. This will load the Gnome 
Desktop and allow you to get back in and fiddle with whatever settings 
you changed. I should warn you though that it will keep giving you error 
messages every time it tries to access GDM, because its not starting up 
properly, which is very annoying.

solutions posted.
