Thankyou for all for your explanations regarding dictionaries.
My thoughts on that matter were that the Australian team working to make
Australian Ubuntu more Oz-specific could save a lot of time and energy by
adopting the Macquarie dictionary referenced on the URL I sent rather than
using a UK English version.

You were quite correct when you pointed out that spelling is much the same -
it is the pronunciation that differs.  I went from living in Germany, where
I learned American English in school to living in Scotland where I had to
learn a different form of English.  Perhaps you could imagine the
difficulties encountered when I had to learn a few stanzas of one of Robert
Burns' poems for a school assignment.  A different language indeed.  My
dictionary then was my class mates and they did not always give me the right
information (just for fun).  Later, as a member of the editorial staff of a
publishing company, I clearly remember the 15 large tomes of the one
dictionary on the bookshelf.              Now, all the above paragraph was
just to add a human angle to the story.

As a proud Australian I resent such things as UK English dictionaries and US
keyboards and would much prefer an Australian dictionary and an Australian
keyboard.  What is in a name?  For me, a lot.
