At a guess:
You extracted them as a user and then moved them to the appropriate
directory? Did you make sure to change the owner/permissions on the files so
that everyone has access to them?
All my fonts (in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/) have the dir permissions of 755,
and the file permissions of 644, all with the owner:group of root:root - my
guess is that on your setup, some of those files are not readable by "others"
(the last octet in the permissions).
