you got it: it wasn't. Didn't like the gateway address. Mind you, that was no where near the error message I received from ifup

wouldn't it be nice to have an error message from DHCPD to the effect of: DHCPD failed as eth0 is not up. eth0 is not up because you screwed up the gateway address???
