Hi Winton,
When I was setting up my toshiba satellite I came across this

there it says the optical drive needs some kernel command parameter (in this case: combined_mode=libata) to work properly.
Not sure if this is the exact proplem you have, but it could have something to do with the combined CD/DVD drive notebooks
nowadays have buit in.
It might be worth a search.
