Thanks for your reply and explanation, it explains a lot!  I'm surprised
that the backports are selected by default.

After a bit of faffing around (or is that phaffing) I gave trying to
remove and then reinstall, felt myself getting more and more confused.
So I reinstalled from a backup (clonezilla is wonderful) and am back up
and running.

It would never have occurred to me to check 'versioning information' in
my own little world I'd thought I should be protected from such things!

Lesson learned.
